In staging the play, I implemented a Chekhovian warm up routine, trying to work from a very physical stand point, ground the actors in physical images for the ideals they represented. Estragon was then awoken by the wash of the voices, and proceeded to gaze out into the audience, who were mostly silent, This was followed with a recitation of 'All the world's a stage' from As You Like It overlapped with a gentle recording of a man saying 'this is for you' over and over. At the sound of the stomach groans, Vladimir leaves clenching his stomach, while Estragon lays down to sleep in time for the snores. Vladimir put on his Hat and Estragon stole and laced up the boots. During this opening segment Vladimir and Estragon entered, each in time with their sound, following that they sort of found their characters and began physicalizing them through posture and action. So in short bursts we hear stomach groans, snores, washes of voices talking and praying some with metalic bursts.

If these four sounds represented the four parts of the human identity, then the rest of the human experience can be summed up as 'Physical sensation' 'Society' 'Spirituality'. These sounds washed over one another one after the other, concluding with the woman saying 'Just like a man.' repeatedly as though she were a broken record, a theme we chose to highlight in the aphasiac break down that is Lucky's monologue. There was a wordy poem for Vladimir, a dirty French joke for Estragon, a drunk German man singing for Pozzo and a computer synth voice recording of a woman saying 'I am _'. For preshow, I designed a 15 minute depiction of the human condition that began as though it were a regular preshow but digressed into a wash of voices and noises. The lights reflected the major colors for the characters blue for left brain/Vladimir, amber for right brain/Estragon, pink for Femininity/Lucky, and Green 'the limelight' for Pozzo.

On the stage down center, in a pool of light was Vladimir's Hat and Estragon's boots. Half of the tree was a three demensional tree made of muslin mache the other a long strip of plywood with the word tree carved out of it. 'Mound' 'Grass' 'Country Road' covered a majority of the stage.The tree was 9 feet tall and near center, it was perhaps the most striking element of the stage. Specifically we took the Tree, Mound, and Country Road, the three scenic elements called for, and created a mirror image with half being conceptual understanding of the ding an sich in words meticulously coating the floor, mound and tree. The set highlighted the Left Brain Right Brain Dualism, with the idea of a mirror image reflected through logical understanding of conceptual things and the sensory appreciation of the world. She is the feminine identity both supressed and subjugated, the happy house wife on acid, a muse who has lost her voice. She is dressed in a blend of housewife/S&M she is painted with grotesque beauty make up. The one change in my version of Godot, Lucky is a woman. Four Bowlers, vaudevillian suits with coat tails in the hobo theme for Didi and Gogo, Pozzo in a slightly more stately attire. We of course did not venture far from the norm of Godot. Vladimir is the left brain, Estragon the right, Pozzo the Masculine Identity and Lucky the feminine idenity. Every design choices sprung from these key words. In staging, I referenced Jungian Archetypes, Left/Right Brain perception, suppression of the feminine instinct in masculinity. Concept: In approaching Waiting For Godot, I researched anything and everything I could find.
